# Seniors No Longer Have to Take a Driving Test -- Only a Vision Test? Really???

Recently, we overheard someone say that since they've turned 80, they don't have to take a driving test anymore, just a vision test.

We thought that was... well, a scam. Shouldn't people at that age have their driving abilities checked out for real?

Come to find out that it's a "sort of true, sort of not" thing.

## The Claim (as Stated) is False

There's no *nationwide* rule where drivers over 80 skip a driving test and only need an eye exam. Driver licensing is entirely state-controlled, and social media claims about sweeping federal senior driving laws requiring tests or exams have been confirmed false by fact-checkers, the IIHS, and official state DMV agencies. There's a full breakdown below, btw. 

What's actually true:

- **Road (behind-the-wheel) tests for seniors are rare.** Only Illinois and New Hampshire require older drivers to retake a road test when renewing their license — and Illinois just eliminated that requirement in 2026\.
- **Vision tests are the common thread.** 41 states require vision tests at renewal, with the triggering age varying widely — California at 70+, Alaska at 69+, Florida at 80+, Texas at 79+.
- **Other age-based hurdles exist beyond vision:** shorter renewal cycles, mandatory in-person (no mail/online) renewal, and occasionally a written knowledge test.

So the kernel of truth is that a **road test is unlikely for someone over 80 in most states, and a vision test is likely.** But framing it as a blanket "no driving test, just an eye test" rule? That a bit of a stretch.
