Use this when reviewing your policy or calling your agent.

Personal & Auto Insurance

  • Am I retired or working less than full-time?
  • Do I drive fewer than 7,500–10,000 miles per year?
  • Is my driving record clean (no accidents or violations in the past 3–5 years)?
  • Have I completed a senior or defensive driving course?
  • Am I over the age threshold for “mature driver” discounts in my state?
  • Do I have more than one policy (home, renters, umbrella) I could bundle?
  • Is there a telematics or usage-based program I could try for a potential discount?

Homeowners or Renters Insurance

  • Am I retired and home most of the time (lower risk of theft/fire)?
  • Do I have a working home security system (camera, alarm, or monitored service)?
  • Have I updated my roof, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC in the last 10 years?
  • Have I avoided any claims in the last 5–10 years?
  • Have I been with this insurer for more than 3–5 years?
  • Am I a member of any senior organizations (AARP, retired teachers, etc.)?

Sample Script to Use With Insurance Agent

Use this whether you're calling, visiting, or sending a message online.

Start with a warm, clear opener: “Hi there — I’m reviewing my budget now that I’m retired, and I wanted to check if I’m getting all the discounts I qualify for on my [auto/home] insurance.”

Then list relevant changes or qualifications: “I’m [your age], I drive under [your mileage] per year, and I’ve never filed a claim. I also recently took a defensive driving course and added a security system to my home.”

Ask directly for discounts: “Are there any senior, retiree, or safety-related discounts I might be missing out on? I’ve heard there may be low mileage or claim-free discounts, too.”

Bonus: Ask about bundling or reassessing your policy: “Would it help to bundle my auto and home coverage with you? And is now a good time to review my coverage and see if there are better options?”

Close graciously: “Thanks for your help — I just want to make sure I’m not overpaying for coverage I’ve worked hard to keep.”
