If you depend on your Social Security check arriving on a certain day every month, we've got news for you: the Social Security Administration (SSA) has started its staggered payment cycle. The distribution is primarily based on the recipient's birth date for those who started receiving benefits after May 1997.
April changes
For most retirees and disability beneficiaries, payments are sent on the following Wednesdays in April:
- Wednesday, April 8: Issued to those with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- Wednesday, April 15: Scheduled for beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, April 22: Distributed to those born between the 21st and 31st of the month.
Exceptions to the Wednesday Cycle
Certain groups receive their payments on fixed dates rather than the birthday-based Wednesday schedule:
- SSI Recipients: Supplemental Security Income payments were issued on Wednesday, April 1.
- Pre-May 1997 Beneficiaries: Individuals who began receiving benefits before May 1, 1997, were paid on Friday, April 3.
- Joint Recipients: Those who receive both Social Security and SSI were also paid their Social Security portion on Friday, April 3.

May changes
Most beneficiaries who started receiving payments after May 1997 receive their checks on a Wednesday based on their birthday:
- Wednesday, May 13: Birthdays between the 1st and 10th.
- Wednesday, May 20: Birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, May 27: Birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Exceptions & Fixed Dates
- SSI Recipients: Supplemental Security Income is scheduled for Friday, May 1.
- Pre-May 1997 Recipients: Those who began receiving benefits before May 1997 are typically paid on the 3rd of the month. Since May 3, 2026, falls on a Sunday, these payments will likely be moved to the preceding business day, Friday, May 1.
- Dual Beneficiaries: If you receive both Social Security and SSI, your Social Security payment will also arrive on Friday, May 1.

Just remember this...
Timing is a little weird for Social Security checks. Social Security benefits are paid in arrears, meaning the check received in April is for the March 2026 benefit.
